THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN EDUCATION

Barinova Elena Dmitrievna
Student of Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Russia, Moscow

Introduction:

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the most influential technologies shaping modern life. AI now affects nearly every sphere of human activity. Education is no exception. As the tools of AI become more advanced, they are reshaping how students learn, how teachers teach, and how institutions manage information.

The thesis of this paper is that AI can greatly enhance the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of education when implemented responsibly and ethically. However, its success depends on maintaining a balance between technological innovation and the human aspects of teaching.

  1. Personalized and Adaptive Learning

One of the key benefits of AI in education is its ability to create personalized learning experiences. Traditional classrooms often teach students at the same pace, which may not suit individual needs. AI systems, by contrast, can analyze each student’s performance and adapt lessons accordingly.

For example, the platform Khan Academy uses algorithms that adjust the difficulty of exercises based on a learner’s progress. Likewise, Duolingo applies natural language processing to identify areas where a language learner struggles and provides targeted practice. This method ensures that students neither fall behind nor become bored due to lack of challenge.

Research shows that adaptive learning powered by AI improves not only academic performance but also motivation (Jones, 2023). By receiving immediate feedback, students feel more involved in their own learning process.

  1. Supporting Teachers and Streamlining Administration

AI does not aim to replace teachers; instead, it acts as a supportive tool that reduces their administrative orkload. AI can grade tests, track attendance, and general statistical reports automatically. This automation allows educators to devote more time to creative instruction, mentoring, and student interaction.

For example, several universities have adopted systems like Turnitin not only for detecting plagiarism but also for assessing writing quality. AI-based grading tools can provide comments on structure, grammar, and clarity, offering students faster feedback.

Moreover, AI can help identify at-risk students. Predictive analytics tools analyze class participation, test scores, and attendance data to find early signs of disengagement.

  1. Language Learning and Communication

Language education has been revolutionized by AI technologies. Applications such as ChatGPT and Grammarly assist learners in writing, speaking, and understanding foreign languages. These tools apply machine learning to correct grammar, suggest vocabulary, and simulate realistic dialogue.

Speech recognition systems also help students practice pronunciation, while translation programs allow them to explore authentic foreign materials. This creates learning opportunities that were once limited to those who could afford private tutors or study abroad.

The global nature of AI-driven platforms makes language learning more interactive, accessible, and personalized than ever before.

  1. The Future of AI in Education

Looking ahead, AI is expected to play an even greater role in shaping educational systems. Intelligent tutoring systems could simulate realistic classroom conversations, offer real-time feedback, and assist students in developing emotional intelligence.

AI may also assist in designing tailor-made curricula for each learner, tracking progress not only academically but also in terms of soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership. Combined with virtual reality and augmented reality, AI could create fully interactive learning spaces that make education engaging and immersive.

However, these innovations should always serve human goals — to inspire curiosity, build knowledge, and foster collaboration.

Conclusion

Artificial intelligence represents a powerful tool for improving global education. It personalizes learning, assists teachers, enhances accessibility, and opens doors to new communication methods. At the same time, it raises complex ethical challenges that require thoughtful regulation and responsible use.

In the end, AI should not replace educators but empower them. Its ultimate purpose is to support the human mind — to make learning more inclusive, efficient, and adaptive for everyone. As technology continues to evolve, the partnership between AI and education will define the future of how people learn and grow around the world.
