With the help of songs, you can learn English very effectively, because music has a strong emotional impact and can help you remember new words and phrases. This article covered tips on how to use songs to learn English.

3 Ways to Learn English using Music:

  1. Learning English by listening to a song, reading and memorizing its text

Emphasis on listening

Listening to songs in English is one way to immerse yourself in the language and become accustomed to English pronunciation. To begin with, the student needs to choose his favorite songs that he would like to learn. There are many sites on the Internet where a person can find lyrics in English. The user can choose any genre of music that he likes – it can be pop music, rock, rap, country, jazz, and so on.

Start listening to the songs in your free time. Try listening to the songs several times to remember the words and melody. Don't worry if you don't understand every word at first – that's normal. You don't need to understand every word to enjoy the music and benefit from learning the language. Try to just listen to the music and enjoy it.

When you have become familiar with the songs and the melody, try reading the lyrics of the songs. This will help you better understand the meaning of the words and phrases, and will also help you remember new vocabulary and grammar structures. You can search for the translation of the songs into your own language to better understand and remember new words and expressions.

When you read the text and remember the words, try to sing the songs yourself. Don't worry if you don't sing well – an attempt to learn and improve your English is important. Singing will help improve your pronunciation and develop language intuition.

In addition, songs can be used as an additional resource for studying grammar, vocabulary, and authentic pronunciation. You can compare the lyrics of the songs with grammar rules and study new words and expressions.

Overall, listening to and learning songs in English is one way to improve English and enhance your language skills.

Practice

With the help of the song «Heat Waves» by Glass Animals, you can practice using this method.

“Can't make you happier now

Heat waves been fakin' me out

Late nights in the middle of June

Sometimes all I think about is you”

We listen to it several times, then read the text and sing along. Then we try to sing by heart. Thus, a person develops listening skills, improves pronunciation and grammar.

  1. Improving English Language Skills Through Song Lyrics

Emphasis on grammar and reading

Reading lyrics is a great way to improve your understanding of English vocabulary and grammar while also reinforcing the melody of the song. When you already know the melody of a song, it's easier to focus on understanding the lyrics.

To begin, find the lyrics to the songs you are listening to. There are many websites online where you can find the lyrics to popular songs in English. Try to find the official lyrics to the song to ensure that they are accurate. Once you have the lyrics, read through them carefully. Pay attention to the meaning of the words and phrases and try to understand how they fit into the context of the song. Highlight or underline any words or phrases that you are not familiar with and look up their definitions. As you read through the lyrics, pay attention to the grammar and sentence structure. Take note of any new grammar structures or verb tenses that you come across. Understanding how grammar is used in popular music can be a fun and engaging way to reinforce what you've learned in your English classes.

Reading the lyrics of a song can also help you memorize new vocabulary and phrases. After you've read through the lyrics a few times, try to sing along with the song. This will help you to remember the words and phrases more easily.

Finally, reading the lyrics of a song is a great way to appreciate the poetic and literary qualities of the English language. Many songwriters use metaphors, similes, and other literary devices in their lyrics, which can be a great way to learn more about English language and culture.

Therefore, reading the lyrics of a song is a great way to improve your English language skills. By paying attention to the vocabulary, grammar, and literary qualities of a song, a person can learn new words and phrases, reinforce your understanding of English grammar, and enjoy the music at the same time.

Practice

Using the popular song "Shallow", we will try to improve grammar: read the text and write out words or phrases, simultaneously listening and stopping the music.

“I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in

I'll never meet the ground

Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us

We're far from the shallow now”

  • Present Continuous: "I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in"
  • Future Simple: "I'll never meet the ground"
  • Present Simple: "Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us" and "We're far from the shallow now."
  1. Learn English with a friend using songs

Emphasis on speaking and developing a dialogue (conversation with another person)

The idea is to create a game in which two players will compete in guessing the missing words in popular English songs. One player will choose a song and skip one word, and the other player will have to guess what the word is. If the player cannot guess, then the first player can give him a hint in the form of a translation into Russian. Players can take turns playing, and the one who scores the most will win.

To start the game, the first player chooses a popular English song that both players need to know. He selects one word in the song and skips it, and then gives a hint in Russian to the second player. The second player must try to guess the missing word in English. If he guesses correctly, then he gets one point. If he can't guess, then the first player can give him a hint, and if the player guesses correctly after that, then he gets only half the score. Then the players switch roles, and the second player chooses a song and skips a word for the first player. The game continues until both players get tired or determine the number of rounds in advance. After the end of the game, the player with the most points is declared the winner. This game can be a fun way to improve your English and knowledge of popular music. Players can use different genres of music and different songs to make the game more interesting and diverse.

Practice

Practicing together with a friend, we develop in speaking. Also, this process can be more pleasant and effective, as motivation is added, and dialogue develops. Take the song “Old Town Road” Lil Nas X and we will sing it together with a friend. For example, in the first two lines it is sung like this:

"Yeah, I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road

I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more"

The next stage is skipping the word (skip take):

"Yeah, I'm gonna... my horse to the old town road

I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more»

A friend should name this word, then he will get points.

Conclusion In conclusion, songs can be a valuable tool for learning English. By listening to and singing along with songs, you can improve your pronunciation, develop your language intuition, learn new vocabulary and grammar structures, and even gain cultural insight. Additionally, using songs as teaching material can make the learning process more engaging and enjoyable for students. By incorporating songs into your language learning routine, you can supplement traditional language learning methods and make the learning process more fun and effective. So, start listening to your favorite English songs today and see how they can enhance your language learning journey!
