Contemporary youth culture is strongly influenced by digital communication and celebrity media discourse. Social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram (принадлежит Meta, признана экстремистской и запрещенной в России), YouTube, and X/Twitter (принадлежит Meta, признана экстремистской и запрещенной в России) have transformed celebrities into active participants in linguistic innovation. Modern celebrities not only influence fashion, music, and behavior but also contribute significantly to the development and spread of slang expressions among young people. Celebrity slang has become an important sociolinguistic phenomenon reflecting identity, group belonging, emotional expression, and cultural values of modern youth.

The study of slang occupies an important place in modern linguistics because slang reflects active lexical change and social interaction. Researchers define slang as a socially marked layer of vocabulary used in informal communication and characterized by expressiveness, novelty, and emotional coloring [1, p. 57]. Slang differs from standard vocabulary because it often appears in youth communities, online discourse, and subcultural communication. Unlike professional jargon or argot, slang primarily performs expressive and social functions rather than technical or secretive purposes.

Youth culture plays a particularly important role in the spread of slang because adolescents and young adults actively use language to construct social identity and demonstrate belonging to specific groups. Slang helps young people express emotions, create solidarity, and distinguish themselves from older generations. In modern digital environments, linguistic innovations spread rapidly through memes, viral videos, livestreams, interviews, and music lyrics. Celebrities become central figures in this process because their speech receives constant media attention and imitation.

Celebrity slang demonstrates several characteristic lexical and semantic features. One of the most common features is creative word formation. Celebrities frequently use blends, abbreviations, respellings, and stylized expressions that are visually memorable and easy to reproduce online. For example, the expression “okurrr,” associated with Cardi B, represents graphostyling and phonetic emphasis. The repeated consonants visually imitate pronunciation and emotional intensity. This type of expression is highly effective in social media communication because it is short, expressive, and visually recognizable.

Another important feature of celebrity slang is acronymization. The term “WAP,” popularized by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, demonstrates how abbreviations can simplify taboo or explicit meanings while remaining memorable and adaptable in online discourse. Acronyms allow users to discuss socially sensitive topics in compressed and playful forms, which contributes to their viral spread among younger audiences.

Celebrity slang also reflects processes of semantic revaluation. Many expressions acquire new meanings in youth communication through celebrity usage. For example, the adjective “savage,” actively promoted in contemporary music culture, shifted from its traditional meaning connected with cruelty to a positive marker of confidence, independence, and self-expression. Similarly, the word “Gucci” evolved from a luxury brand name into an informal adjective meaning “good,” “fine,” or “fashionable.” Such semantic transformations illustrate how celebrity discourse influences lexical meaning and cultural associations.

Fandom-related vocabulary represents another important category of celebrity slang. Celebrities and fan communities often create collective identity labels that strengthen social belonging. Examples include “Swifties” for fans of Taylor Swift, “Beliebers” for supporters of Justin Bieber, and “ARMY” associated with BTS. These labels function not only as fan identifiers but also as sociolinguistic markers of participation in global online communities. Such vocabulary demonstrates how celebrity culture shapes collective identity among young people.

An important sociolinguistic aspect of celebrity slang is its connection with authenticity and self-presentation. Young audiences often imitate celebrities whose communication style appears natural, emotional, and relatable. Slang expressions used by influencers and musicians are frequently adopted because they help young users perform confidence, humor, irony, or individuality. However, the popularity of slang expressions is highly dependent on audience perception. If celebrity slang appears artificial or forced, users may reject or parody it instead of adopting it.

Digital platforms significantly accelerate the spread of celebrity slang. TikTok trends, viral hashtags, reaction memes, livestream clips, and short-form video content create ideal conditions for rapid lexical diffusion. Expressions can spread globally within days and become integrated into everyday communication among young users from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. As a result, celebrity slang contributes to globalization processes in language and encourages hybrid forms combining English with local linguistic elements.

In conclusion, celebrity slang represents an important reflection of contemporary youth culture and digital communication practices. Celebrity discourse influences lexical innovation, semantic change, and identity construction in modern English. The popularity of celebrity slang is connected with its emotional expressiveness, memorability, and adaptability to social media communication. Slang expressions created or popularized by celebrities help young people express belonging, evaluation, humor, and personal identity. Therefore, the study of celebrity slang contributes to understanding current sociolinguistic processes, youth communication, and the interaction between language and media culture.
