Introduction

E-sports, the competitive world of online gaming, has emerged as a global phenomenon with a massive following and lucrative opportunities [1]. In recent years, Çetin & Coşkuner (2021) evaluated E-sports tourism as a new trend in the tourism industry that has gained traction as a niche market that combines the excitement of competitive gaming with the allure of travel and tourism experiences [2]. Indonesia, with its diverse culture, natural beauty, and vibrant gaming community, stands poised to capitalize on the growing trend of e-sports tourism. By strategically harnessing the power of e-sports events, Indonesia can showcase its unique offerings on the global stage and attract a new wave of tourists seeking immersive gaming experiences [3].

One of the key strengths of e-sport tourism lies in its ability to transcend geographical boundaries and connect individuals from different corners of the globe through a shared passion for gaming. Popović (2023) measures e-sports as a phenomenon of new trends in tourism [4]. Indonesia's strategic location in Southeast Asia further enhances its appeal as a hub for international e-sports tournaments and events. With proper infrastructure and support, Indonesia can position itself as a leading destination for e-sports enthusiasts, fostering cultural exchange and economic growth in the process.

However, along with its strengths, e-sport tourism also presents certain challenges and weaknesses that must be addressed to fully realize its potential. Previous studies found out that issues such as infrastructure development, regulatory frameworks, and cultural adaptation [5] need careful consideration to ensure the success and sustainability of e-sports tourism initiatives in Indonesia. By conducting a thorough SWOT analysis, stakeholders can identify areas for improvement and develop targeted strategies to overcome obstacles and maximize opportunities. This article delves into the potential of e-sport tourism events to promote Indonesia in the international market, leveraging the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis) associated with this burgeoning industry.

Methodology

SWOT Analysis

Table

SWOT Analysis

Strengths:

1. Rich Cultural Heritage: Indonesia boasts a diverse and rich cultural heritage, providing unique opportunities to integrate local culture into e-sport events, attracting international participants and spectators. [6]

2. Emerging E-sport Scene: Indonesia has witnessed significant growth in its e-sport industry, with the emergence of professional teams, tournaments, and a growing fan base, providing a solid foundation for hosting e-sport tourism events [7].

3. Geographical Advantage: Indonesia's strategic location in Southeast Asia makes it easily accessible to neighboring countries, potentially attracting a large regional audience to e-sport tourism events.

4. Government Support:The Indonesian government has shown interest in promoting both tourism and the e-sport industry, providing potential support, funding, and infrastructure for such events. The economic impact of esports events can be attributed to several factors. First, these events attract plenty of visitors, who spend money on travel, accommodation, food, and entertainment. Second, esports events can generate media exposure for the host city, which can lead to increased tourism and investment. Third, esports events can create jobs in the gaming, media, and hospitality industries [8].

Weaknesses:

1. Infrastructure Challenges: Limited infrastructure for hosting large-scale e-sport events, including arenas, high-speed internet access, and accommodation facilities, may pose challenges.

2. Limited International Exposure: The Indonesian e-sport scene may have limited international exposure compared to established e-sport hubs, potentially hindering the attraction of international participants and sponsors.

3. Cultural and Language Barriers: Cultural and language differences may present challenges in organizing and promoting e-sport tourism events to an international audience.

4. Regulatory Constraints: Regulatory hurdles such as visa requirements, taxation, and event regulations may complicate the organization and execution of e-sport tourism events in Indonesia.

Opportunities:

1. Growing Global E-sport Market: The booming global e-sport market presents significant opportunities for Indonesia to tap into the growing trend and establish itself as a prominent destination for e-sport tourism.

2. Cultural Integration:Indonesia can leverage its rich cultural heritage to create unique e-sport tourism experiences, offering a blend of gaming and cultural immersion to attract international visitors.

3. Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with international e-sport organizations, gaming companies, and tourism agencies can enhance the visibility and reach of e-sport tourism events in the international market.

4. Innovative Event Concepts: Developing innovative event concepts that combine e-sports with Indonesia's cultural offerings, such as themed tournaments or cultural festivals, can differentiate Indonesian e-sport tourism events and appeal to a wider audience [9].

Threats:

1. Competition from Other Destinations: Intense competition from other destinations vying to attract e-sport tourism may limit Indonesia's market share and international visibility in the industry.

2. Technological Advancements: Rapid technological advancements in e-sports may require continuous investment in infrastructure and equipment to remain competitive and meet international standards.

3. Political and Economic Instability: Political unrest or economic downturns in Indonesia could deter international visitors and investors, impacting the success of e-sport tourism events.

4. Negative Public Perception: Negative stereotypes or perceptions surrounding E-Sports and gaming may hinder efforts to promote Indonesia as a desirable destination for e-sport tourism, requiring targeted marketing and education initiatives.

Interpretation of The Result

The SWOT analysis of sports tourism provides valuable insights for exploring opportunities in e-sport tourism events to promote Indonesia in the international market. Strengths identified in previous analyses include existing infrastructure, volunteer support, economic stability, and political standing.
